Reading Comprehension Intervention – Inference Training - 2 Sessions

  • Session 1 - Tues 8th October
  • Session 2 – Tuesday 15th October.
  • The course is delivered online, split across two mornings
  • Delegates who attend the training will then be able to implement the intervention in their school setting.

Do you have pupils who decode efficiently but show limited understanding when questioned about their reading?

If so, the evidence-based ‘Inference Training Intervention’, described as ‘remarkable’ by Professor Gregg Brooks in his study, is designed specifically for these pupils.  It offers significant gains for pupils with weak comprehension skills and will provide a range of strategies to help them acquire meaning and enjoyment from their reading. Whilst the intervention was originally designed to be delivered to pupils in Key Stages 2 and 3, there are now GCSE texts available to purchase which support KS4 pupils too. If you wish to have access to the GCSE texts, it’s an additional £10, as it’s a sold as a separate resource.

Course Description:

The training will help you to:

  • Understand pupils’ barriers to reading comprehension
  • Carry out diagnostic conversations to gain insight into pupils’ approaches to reading
  • Develop strategies to help pupils improve reading comprehension
  • Understand how to deliver the intervention using the electronic resource file which includes 70+ texts. (NB This is an essential resource which will need to be purchased separately from the trainer at a cost of £50. One file is only needed per school establishment but please note access will need to be from one email address only and using a shared password)

Course Outcomes:

Delegates will learn:

  • The barriers to reading comprehension
  • How to carry out a 1:1 diagnostic conversation and unravel a pupil’s difficulties
  • How to deliver the intervention to groups of up to 4 pupils, designed to be delivered twice a week for 40 minutes each session over a twelve-week period. NB The evidence is based on this model so if a school were to choose to deliver it differently, rate of impact will vary.
    • Formative and summative ways to track and monitor progress
  • Facilitator
  • Venue & Travel Information
