Sarah Howarth (RANS, Rochdale Borough Council)
Sarah Howarth (RANS PD Team, RBC)
I have been a mainstream primary teacher for 21 years then more recently, in late 2019 joined the Rochdale Additional Needs Service Physical Disabilities Team (RANS PD Team) as a specialist PD Teacher. The RANS PD team support students with a PD to access a mainstream education. We support mainstream nursery, primary and secondary settings to try to reduce barriers to education whether that be a physical barrier such as the need for accessible changing facilities, changing beds, hoists, ramps etc. or a curriculum barrier i.e. the need for adjustable desks, steps, cushions etc. to advising on the use of assistive technology and supportive recording equipment with the aim of helping schools to adapt teaching methods/resources to enable the CYPs with a physical disability to access a full curriculum.
In 2019 I completed the 4 day ‘Train the Trainer’ Course enabling me to train others to complete a one day course entitled ‘Assisting Children To Move’.
Every two years I attend a 1 day ‘update’ course for the trainers.
I have delivered this course with colleagues termly for the last 2 years and together, we aim to equip colleagues in educational settings in our borough to feel able to safely assist the children and young people in their care to safely move around the settings.
