Early Years WellComm training – how to navigate and use the toolkit
- The Early Years WellComm Toolkit is a speech, language and communication screen and intervention pack for children 6 months to 6 years old to identify, support and develop speech and language needs in young children.
- This training is suitable for colleagues within the Early Years and foundation stage, who will carry out a WellComm screening.
The session will cover:
- Learn about the rationale for using the WellComm.
- Understand how this tool fits into Rochdale’s and Greater Manchester’s development plan for the support of speech, language and communication development in early years.
- Practice using the screening tool with the support of a Speech and Language Therapist.
- Practice marking and analysing the findings.
- Explore the Big Book of Ideas and discuss how to use the resource flexibly in your setting.
- Understand how to develop intervention groups/sessions for targeted children.
Please bring your WellComm toolkit with you to use during the training session.

I am a highly specialist Speech and Language therapist, qualifying from Leeds Beckett University in 2002. I am registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) and I am a member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT)
I have worked as a member of the children’s speech and language therapy team in Rochdale and also within the multi-disciplinary team at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital in the Cleft Lip and Palate team.
Since September 2020, I have been in the role of the Early Years Advisory speech and language therapist and am commissioned jointly by the NHS (Northern Care Alliance) and Rochdale Local Authority. I provide speech, language and communication training, advice and support to all of the early years workforce across the Rochdale borough. Alongside this I offer speech, language and communication drop in sessions for our families with children aged 0-5 years on a termly basis. I also have a role within the family hubs to promote speech, language and communication within the home learning environment.
