Diversifying how the Primary Art Curriculum is taught in Rochdale

  • Join us for a unique event providing inspiration and information about how schools can diversify the teaching of art so that is it more relevant, engaging and inclusive for the children that live in our borough.
  • Lunch will be provided on arrival.

Tour of Ebor Studios

The event will start with a tour of Ebor Studios in Littleborough, which is home to a community of 28 professional artists and designers including painters, sculptors, sound artists, dress designers, furniture makers, ceramicists, glass makers, performers, and photographers. During the tour we will start to explore how schools can bring ‘art to life’ by engaging with our local creative community.

Presentation: Diversifying Materials and Processes

After the tour there will be a presentation by Kara Lyons, Sculptor and Founding Director of Ebor Studios. Kara makes gallery exhibitions, commissions, installations and performances both internationally and the UK. Kara will share her practice and provide ideas for using a range of materials and processes to teach sculpture in the classroom.

Workshop: Reflecting Diversity

When the diversity of our borough is reflected in the curriculum, children from all backgrounds feel represented and empowered to pursue their ambitions. The Creative Learning team from Touchstones Rochdale will share the work of artists with diverse lived experiences who have artwork in the collection at Touchstones. They will demonstrate how the collection can be used to make the teaching of Art and Design Programmes of Study for KS1 and KS2 more inclusive and diverse. Through practical activities we will all have the opportunity to ‘have a go’ at  a range of art and design techniques inspired by diverse artists.

What you will gain from attending:

- Connections with local artists and cultural organisations who can deliver activity in your school

- The opportunity to develop your creative skills and gain confidence in delivering the art and design programmes of study

- Information about free resources and activities that will support increasing your pupil’s cultural capital

- Space and time to connect with others, reflect on your work and gain inspiration

This event has been organised by Create Rochdale, a network of professionals and organisations working together to improve cultural education in Rochdale. The event is funded by the Cultural Development Fund (a Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) fund administered by Arts Council England) and supported by Rochdale Borough Council and Rochdale Development Agency.
